Campbell Museums: The History of Moffett Field

This event has already passed

John Mascali, Captain, USNR Retired, will share the history of Moffett Field since its beginning in 1930 with the building of the historic Hangar One, which dominates the skyline in the South Bay, and the arrival of one of the largest airships ever built, the USS Macon. The arrival of the U.S. Navy in Santa Clara Valley along with NASA, helped start the rise of Silicon Valley and the technology revolution we are so famous for today. During World Wars I and II Moffett Field served as the home base for many squadrons, flying all types of fighter aircraft. It continued during the Cold War days serving as the home of the U.S. Pacific Fleet's Patrol Wing Command and the base for the P3 aircraft sub-hunters, whose job it was to shadow Soviet submarines off the West Coast.

John is a retired Navy Captain with over 30,000 hours of flight time both as a Naval Aviator and commercial airline pilot with Pan Am and Delta Airlines. He commanded several squadrons at Moffett Field during his 35 year Navy career and currently serves on the Moffett Field Historical Society's Board of Directors. He is a 1959 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, lives in Saratoga, and is a well-regarded speaker who you will enjoy hearing.
