History Happy Hour: The 1933 Brooke Hart Kidnapping and Murder

Join us for an evening of historical true crime! In 1933 Brooke Hart, the eldest son of Alexander Hart, the owner of the L. Hart & Son department store in downtown San Jose, California was kidnaped and murdered. The Hart family was one of the most respected and wealthiest families in San Jose. The kidnapping and murder became national news, as too did the lynching of the two accused defendants: Thomas Harold Thurmond and John M. Holmes.
Judge Bernal will present the tragic killing of Brooke Hart that led to the failure of due process and the violent lynching of the two defendants.
This event occurs inside the Carriage House, next to the historic Ainsley House. Doors will open at 5:30 pm.
Judge Bernal's presentation will begin at 6 pm.
Light appetizers and beverages will be served.

Paul R. Bernal is a judge of the Superior Court of Santa Clara County in California. He assumed office in 2000. His current term ends on January 6, 2025. In addition, Judge Bernal serves on The Bench Bar Historical Society of Santa Clara County, whose mission is to preserve the history of the legal profession in Santa Clara County and to educate attorneys and members of the public about it.
