Wendi Kirby Music presents A Journey of Sufi Music and Poetry on Thursday, August 22, 7pm-8pm. The evening will be hosted by writer and MIIS professor Nukhet Kardam and Middle Eastern musician Amir Etemadzadeh. Advance tickets are $35 general admission, $25 for students. Tickets are $40 at the door.

About A Journey of Sufi Music & Poetry

This event will weave the audience through an alchemy of words, music, philosophy, and awakening rooted in the Sufi tradition of communing with the divine. Interwoven with famous works of Sufi writers such a Rumi and Hafez, the night will also feature original poetry and musical compositions by Nukhet and Amir.

About Nukhet Kardam

Nukhet Kardam is Professor Emerita at MIIS. She started her career with a focus on organizational change, especially the response of international development agencies to gender issues. She then turned her attention to how global women’s human rights norms are received and implemented in local contexts. In addition to gender identity, Prof. Kardam’s research interests include self and identity in general and intercultural communication.

About Amir Etemadzadeh

Amir Etemadzadeh is a Middle Eastern musician, instructor, performer, and composer. Born and raised in Iran, he received extensive musical education throughout his youth. During his time at Tehran Music University, he focused on Tombak and Tar performance, while also learning vocal techniques and radif theory. After arriving in the U.S. in 2003, he expanded his instrumental repertoire, learning a variety of percussion traditions from around the world. Amir continued his musical education at UC Santa Cruz.
