Awaaz
This event has already passed
Awaaz meaning “voice” is an evening of Indian Contemporary dance vignettes, based on relevant social themes including the room for dissent in a democracy, gender stereotypes and Alzheimer’s disease. Other works explore the edgy and exciting intersection of Indian Classical & Contemporary dance forms.
Mona Khan Company, the Bay Area's premier Bollywood dance company, is thrilled to present Awaaz: a dance project to engage with and comment on social issues, faced by many in today's world, through the power of movement and music.
The company will be presenting new and existing Indian Contemporary dance vignettes at the ODC Theater in San Francisco. One of these include "Broken Memories" a journey through Alzheimer's (Audience's Choice Award winner at sjDanceCo.'s ChoreoProject Awards 2016). Other works you will see at the show will explore the exciting and edgy intersection of Indian Classical & Contemporary movement!
They believe that this project is important, exceedingly important, as dance is a unique and universal platform to give a voice to those who remain silent.
In the past, we have presented works on issues ranging from domestic violence and Alzheimer's to the rat race of everyday life. We launched the project with a show called "Soch" in 2014 at The Garage and "Between the Lines" in 2015 at the ODC Theater in San Francisco. Both were completely sold out. This year we hope to expand our audience base by having 4 shows over 2 days in ODC.
