Zines and Scenes: Your Voice, Your Art

Attention, artists and storytellers! Zines and Scenes:Your Voice, Your Art, is a free, fun-filled day of zine making, animation, creative writing, and competition on Saturday, October 5,10am-4pm.

Youth Arts Collective, Monterey Museum of Art, Monterey Public Library, and California State Parks present a day of workshops, art projects, and special guest talks, culminating in a finished take-home zine. Check out the schedule of activities below.

Youth Arts Collective

Location: 472 Calle Principal
10am-4pm: Gumball machine zine scenes
10:30-11:30am: Animation games with Animator Oliver Frederickssen
2pm-3pm: Animated Antics panel with animator Oliver Fredericksen and graphic designer Meredith Bond

At Youth Arts Collective, let your imagination run wild and grab a surprise drawing prompt from our gumball dispenser! Artists can choose to submit their creations for a chance to be featured in our collaborative zine.

Interested in trying your hand at animation? Create short animated works in partnership with fellow artists under the guidance of animator Oliver Fredericksen.

Monterey Museum of Art

Location: 559 Pacific Street
11am-12:30pm: Cosplay makeup workshop
12:30pm-3pm: Zine cover art competition
11am-4pm: Create a mixed media collage comic book page in the galleries

Monterey Museum of Art invites participants to create cover art that empowers a message for the future of art in Monterey. The winner of the Zine Cover Art Competition will be announced during a closing ceremony at Frances Elkins Park.

Along with the museum's Zine Cover Art Competition, create a mixed media comic book page inspired by Belle Yang's art and graphic novels, or participate in a cosplay makeup workshop.

Monterey Public Library

Location: 625 Pacific Street
10am-11:30am: Creative writing workshop
12pm-1:30pm: Comic Jam with graphic novelist Karen Luke

In a Creative Writing Competition at the Monterey Public Library, explore your emotions, share your stories, and write about what you'd like to share with your community. Our theme is, "As the next generation of artists, what do you hope for? What do you value?"

Alongside our Creative Writing Competition, join guest artist Karen Luk in a comic book workshop and collaborate with all attendees to make one.

Casa Gutierrez, California State Parks

Location: 590 Calle Principal
10am-4pm: Animated Antics exhibition open house
11am-11:15am: Meet the artists of Animated Antics

Visit the newly opened Casa Gutierrez Community Art Gallery to view the Animated Antics exhibition by Youth Arts Collective (YAC) teen artists. Hosted by California State Parks and Arts in California Parks.

Join us for a short reception with the YAC artists to meet the creative minds behind the art.
